Hot water is a luxury that many people take for granted. They don't realise how important it is until they have to live without it—or pay the price of its replacement! It’s distressing when you turn on the taps and realise that there's no hot water. Especially if it’s freezing outside, or if you've had a really hard day—but don't panic. There are a variety of reasons why having no hot water may occur. There may also be times when it still works with the central heating on, but not in the shower itself.

What do I do if there is no hot water in my house?
Check boiler settings
Although your boiler seems to be working properly, there are some things you can still check:
- The boiler is set to supply hot water. · The boiler has been set to ‘heat and water.
- If there is a reset button, push it, then wait for several minutes before turning the appliance back on.
- Make sure there are no power cuts
Is there energy supply to your boiler?
If your boiler seems to be operating normally, check whether the electricity and gas supplies are working properly. If your boiler keeps tripping the fuse, a Gas Safe engineer should be called to diagnose the problem.
Inspect the thermostat
Sometimes, people accidentally change the thermostat settings or other boiler controls. If you have kids who are always fiddling with things and could easily bump into something like that while they're playing around, or if you've ever brushed against the dial as you’re walked past (and then forgot to reset it) this might be what happens when temperatures suddenly drop unexpectedly in your home.
If your thermostat is set below 21℃, you might not have any heat. To fix this problem, increase the temperature setting. If there are no readings on the panel when it's working—if all of it seems blank and unresponsive—then maybe you should change some batteries or check another source for power.
What about water pressure?
If you have recently noticed that the hot-water tap in your bathroom feels colder than usual, look at your boiler pressure. If it is low, there may be a problem with water pressure in the house. Check the gauge on your boiler. If it shows less than one bar, your tank is low. If it reads more than 2.75 bars high, there's a problem with the heat output and you should contact an engineer immediately.
Check for frozen pipes
If your pipes have frozen, you may find that it affects the way your boiler works. This can happen not just in the immediate aftermath of freezing temperatures but also over time as a result of repeated exposure to cold air. To fix a frozen pipe, gently pour hot water over the entire length of it. Don't use boiling water because it can damage your pipes and appliances. Repeat the process if necessary, but you may need to hire a professional engineer to inspect the issue.
Do you have warm radiators?
If your boiler is working and there's no hot water, check the heating. Is it operating properly? Are all of your radiators producing heat when turned on, or are some rooms colder than others? If there are any obstructions in the radiators, a heating engineer can use water pressure to push its way through. This is called a Powerflush.
No hot water? Time to call heating engineers
Remember that your boiler uses gas and can be dangerous. Hopefully, this checklist will help you diagnose why you have no hot water if any of the issues listed above apply to you.
